A Welcome Letter From the Director of Volunteers, Susanna Seigler!

Welcome to Volunteers in Medicine!

Hi there,

I am absolutely thrilled to welcome you to the Volunteers in Medicine family! If you’re reading this, it means you’re thinking about joining one of the most dynamic, caring, and impactful teams in the community—and we couldn’t be more excited to have you on board.

Here at the VIM HHI and Dafuskie Clinics, we’re not just about providing top-notch medical, dental, mental health, and wellness services. We’re about creating a vibrant, joyful space where every person—volunteer, patient, or staff member—feels valued and inspired. When you volunteer with us, you’re not just giving your time; you’re becoming part of a movement to bring health, hope, and happiness to those who need it most.

We have so many exciting opportunities for you to explore! Of course, we always need clinicians, but there’s so much more to do here at VIM. Whether you’re greeting and assisting patients, helping our daily clinics run smoothly, or supporting our wellness market, there’s a role for you.

Love languages? We always need interpreters! Prefer to get hands-on with community events? You’ll have a blast helping out at our fundraisers and outreach programs. There’s truly something for everyone, and every role is vital to our mission.

There’s no doubt—YOU are wanted here!

The energy here is contagious, and we know you’ll feel it the moment you step through our doors. We’re not just coworkers; we’re a family, and we love working alongside amazing people like YOU to make our community a better place.

As the Director of Volunteers, I can promise that my staff and I will always be here to cheer you on, support you, and ensure you have everything you need to thrive in your role. We’ll provide on-the-job training, flexible scheduling, and a whole lot of encouragement to make sure your experience is meaningful, impactful, and—most importantly—FUN.

So, what are you waiting for? Jump in, get involved, and see the incredible difference you can make. We can’t wait to see the unique talents and energy you bring to the team. Together, we’re going to make magic happen!

With excitement and gratitude,
Susanna Seigler

VIM Volunteer FAQ’s

I have no medical experience. Can I still volunteer?

Absolutely! Think of all the roles that keep a hospital running. We need Receptionists, Schedulers, Greeters, Screeners, and other Lay Volunteers to help manage our Medical Clinic, Dental Clinic, Mental Health Clinic, and Wellness Market. Plus, we’re always looking for Interpreters to join our team!

How often should I volunteer?

It’s entirely up to you and your availability. Many of our most successful volunteers commit to coming once a week at the same time. Others volunteer twice a month, once a month, or even seasonally. Whatever works best for you!

I don’t live here year-round. Can I still volunteer?

Yes, absolutely! Many of our volunteers only join us when they’re in town. You’ll have the flexibility to sign up for shifts in advance based on your schedule.

What if I can’t make it to a shift I’ve signed up for?

Our Volunteer Management System, Volgistics, makes it easy to manage your schedule from your phone, tablet, or computer. If you need to cancel, you can remove yourself from the schedule in Volgistics. For cancellations within 24 hours of your shift, simply email or text the Director of Volunteers

Do I need to find my own substitute if I can’t come?

No, we’ll take care of that! If you see an opening in Volgistics and want to fill in for someone else, you can easily add yourself to the schedule. Occasionally, the Director of Volunteers may send out an email asking for extra help during a specific shift—you’re welcome to respond if you’re available.

What if I don’t enjoy the volunteer role I’ve been assigned?

Let us know! The Director of Volunteers can help you transition into a different role that better suits your interests. We’re also happy to train you for multiple positions if you’d like to try a variety of tasks

How are new volunteers trained?

Most of our training happens on the job! On your first day, you’ll meet your team and shadow an experienced volunteer until you feel confident in your role. If your position requires access to our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, we’ll provide you with a login and ensure you’re comfortable using it. Please keep your login information confidential.

Why is it important to track volunteer hours?

Tracking volunteer hours helps us showcase the value of our Clinic to the community. This information is vital for grant applications and other funding opportunities. In 2023 alone, VIM volunteers helped save the community over $13 million in healthcare services!

How do I track my volunteer hours?

During your Clinic tour, we’ll take your photo to create your VIM Volunteer ID Badge. The badge includes a barcode you’ll scan at the start and end of each shift. For hours spent volunteering outside the Clinic, such as at community or fundraising events, you can log them manually in Volgistics.

What should I wear when volunteering?

Clinical Volunteers: Scrubs, a lab coat, and comfortable shoes are ideal.

Lay Volunteers: Neat, professional clothing is recommended. Avoid tattered jeans, short shorts, or open-toed shoes to ensure safety and maintain a polished appearance.

Volunteers are critical to VIM Clinic’s mission of healing. Our dedicated team of volunteers are committed to helping others who are in need. Volunteers at VIM Clinic conduct themselves with dignity, courtesy, kindness and consideration while working in a professional manner.

We are always seeking Physicians, Dental Professionals, Mental Health Professionals, Nurses, Pharmacists and Lay (Administrative) Volunteers. Experience is not necessary or required for our volunteer positions. We will introduce you to VIM Clinic and train you! Many of our volunteers are retired, coming from many different careers and specialties.
